I took these pictures of my kids today. It was the picnic that was the last ditch effort to save the day. Daddy was coming home late and the day had been rough already and just maybe a picnic and a walk and a few pushes on the swings would redeem it. Just maybe.
And the truth is it was lovely. We got out, we breathed fresh air, we enjoyed one another. And then we came home and things were right back where we started. And these are the pictures I have to commemorate the day. Not a picture of a fit being thrown, or a mess being made, or a fight being picked, or a voice being raised. Not a peek into the unkind words, the over the top tears, the real messiness of it all. Just these pictures of my kids enjoying a picnic.
My heart hurts knowing that life is hard and there will be days when I fail horribly and there may be wounds. Days like today when I am just sure we are all beyond redemption. I wish I could perfectly lead my children to their Creator, but I haven't, I can't - not perfectly. But I know there are moments to be celebrated, like a picnic in the park. Times when I get it and they get it. Little slices of time when my loving on them is showing them the love of their Father. So I rejoice in these moments I have and pray God's grace over a new day, a fresh start.
